WHO'S SWANKY?

I live to groove and I groove to live. I put things into perspective. I'm a passionate person who brings it to life and to my own craft. I'm a creative singer, songwriter, lyricist, trumpeter, DJ, producer, composer, arranger, music aficionado, lover, fun-lovin' (fun to love and fun to be loved by) and last but not least, all around cool guy. I'm a musician for hire and am becomin' a name that is dropped both locally and internationally. Call me Swanky. I'm out here to musically influence the world and to spread love through music.

Open your mind and I'll open your soul...

This joint is pretty low key...my thoughts spill on the canvas. You can use your paintbrush to make use of the colours.

I am the leader of a hip hop/jazz/funk band called The Vibrasonic Sessions

I am 1/2 of The International Incident a.k.a. (with Chile's own Max Damage)

I am Octavio Santos (yes, my birth name) when it comes to trumpet work and vocals

I am Swanky when it comes to mic work and rippin' it lyrically

You will find me in many projects...lend me your eardrums.

I GOT BEATS FROM ADAM HURST!!!!!

Yes, my dude ad h from the UK.

Let’s make movements.

He never does R&B…I kinda pushed him into it when I made “I Must Confess"…LOL!!!! Ok, let’s get technical here…this project is electronic soul. We’re gonna start a project (1 of 3 that I have…oh lawd) and we’re gonna call ourselves sum’n…a duo name. I dunno what though.

Any suggestions?

Lemme calls some collaborators too =)

Pryslezz, LyricL and Capitol A are some of a couple that I’m callin’ aboard.

9 December 11

DAZ-I-KUE OF BUGZ IN THE ATTIC PLAYED MY JOINT “I MUST CONFESS” ON RBMA RADIO!!!!!!!!

Wow…this is some honourable biz. Out of the 37 artists and 22 tracks on that triple vinyl compilation, I get played from the 10 he selected =)

I’m just overly excited cuz being played on the radio means my music is worth playin’. I didn’t request to get it played…it just was.

I’m a really big fan of Bugz In The Attic in which Daz-I-Kue is a member of.

I’ve worked with Daz before in the sense that he mixed the oh so wonderful LyricL and her album “Amazed”. The mixing done includes the track I worked on with her alongside Heidi Vogel and Baby Sol, produced by A.C. Layne called “Sweet U" which has gotten SUCH A GREAT REVIEW ON BLUES & SOUL MAGAZINE (READ IT HERE AND MASHUP PREVIEW “AMAZED”…”SWEET U” STARTS AT 6:34). Thank you Gareth Morgan once again for writing with such positivity and with high regard to our joint.

Well…Vinyl Love, the show that Daz has on The Red Bull Music Academy's RBMA Radio has given “I Must Confess” a proper rub on the 4th spot. YAY! =)

Ok Adam…(he produced it if you haven’t paid attention to me yet)…we need to get played out as much as we can!

It sounds so dope to hear my name said in a UK accent even if he mispronounced it. It’s ot biggie…people say Oc-tay-vee-oh…even though it’s s’posed to be Oc-tah-vee-oh.

Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe shit…no biggie.

I just love the fact that I’ve been played, shouted and he even says I did vocals and horns.

How lovely!

Bless up Daz and thanks for the spin famlay! =)

YOU CAN LISTEN TO DAZ-I-KUE’S 15th EDITION OF VINYL LOVE: EXCHANGE BUREAU MUSIC SPECIAL ON “THE BIG 3” ON RBMA RADIO HERE. No digital biz…just vinyl!

And hey…if you wanna pick up a copy of “The Big 3"…get at ME or Exchange Bureau Music online.

Remember, I add extra goodies if you get it through me and…and…

I’ll tag it with this along with a personal note, yearbook style ;)

WHAT NUMBER OUT OF 500 WILL YOU BE?

3 December 11

FEIST CONTINUED + CASEY YUGO & THE VIBRASONIC SESSIONS + LYRICL’S “AMAZED” GETS A REVIEW ON BLUES & SOUL MAGAZINE AND “SWEET U” IS HIGHLY BIGGED UP!

Yeah, I’ve been up and about, plus I was mad sleepy yesternight after the concert.

SO…

Pretty much what I could’ve said, Joyce already did. She blogged the shit out of it.

I just wish I got to jump on stage with Feist like those damn hipsters. FREAKIN’ HIPSTERS.

2 encores though…that’s dope!!!!

Oh well…the quote of that whole excursion…”It is what it is”, LOL!!!

Opportunities present themselves and me, I’m not gon’ sweat it. If the bus stops, I’ll board it, so to speak.

So…I think y’all should listen to her cover of “Inside and Out”. I like her take on the Bee Gees original, which I wish she did with her band.

But damn y’all…the band was on point.

Seein’ that stage reminded me that I’m about to go on in 2 days (at that time - it was December 1) myself with The Vibrasonic Sessions alongside Casey Yugo.

I got out of rehearsal 3 hours ago…and rest assured we’ll blow your mind. 2 girlfriends of 2 of the band members (band member girlfriends are awesome, LOL!) have sat in session and I know they’re diggin’ what we’re packin’!

Bad news though…there will be no horn section. I AM THE HORN SECTION. S’all good though. I’ll hold it down. Hopefully I do…

SO…DECEMBER 3. OH THAT’S TODAY!

9 PM, WE’RE ON.

TRY TO COME EARLY…I HEARD IT’S GON’ BE PACKED LIKE HAAAAAAAALE!!!!

With Casey Yugo on lead vocals, THE VIBRASONIC SESSIONS ARE:

Octavio N. Santos (Swanky) :: trumpet/flugelhorn/backing vocals/percussion/vocal fx
David Seale (The 7th Seale) :: keyboards
Damon Pfaff (Nomad) :: guitar
Daniel Magno (this mofo has no nickname…YET) :: bass
Shaine Crosbie-Cameron (DJ Lefty) :: drums

PLEASE DON’T MISS THIS, I IMPLORE YOU: 627 Queen St. W, GALLERY C.C.

FREE CUPCAKES AND TWO FOR ONE BEERS!!! FREEEEEEE CUPCAKES!!!!! I DON’T CARE ABOUT BEER. I LIKE CUPCAKES!!!!! IN FACT, IF YOU KNOW ME…PLEASE BAKE ME SOME!!!!! =)

We will musically serenade you…enough to make your Keith sweat. Yeah…wait what?

Also…one last thing. My yestermornin’ was made when I found out Blues & Soul Magazine did a review of UK soul sista LyricL in regards to her ”Amazed" album.

The review was great…WHAT WAS EVEN BETTER WAS THAT the track that got bigged up the most was “Sweet U”.

Why is it such a big deal?

It’s because it’s my first UK feature release…I contributed horns on the project with LyricL taking over the spoken word alongside vocalists Heidi Vogel and Baby Sol on the soulful house track. A.C. Layne produced this monster! L got daps on her spoken word poetry! I’m glad we got together to do this…we did it!

Shout out to Gareth Morgan for givin’ the album a 9 out of 10 and for speakin’ so highly of “Sweet U”.

This is one of THE best vocal house tracks of 2011

PLEASE…DO READ GARETH MORGAN’S REVIEW OF LYRICL’S “AMAZED” HERE!

PLEASE…DOWNLOAD “AMAZED” HERE!!

I felt accomplished that I was able to add to the mix. I was at work when I saw this and I didn’t wanna cry tears of joy or anythin’ like that in the open…LOL!

Thank you though Gareth…that review meant a lot to me. I need to try and get a physical copy of that issue if I can get my hands on it.

This is what LyricL sent me…we’ve never met yet and time zones MEAN NOTHING.

Your instrument ‘is’ your voice king, as too is mine! We all delivered and made new. It clearly had a place on the album and to review all 13 songs and break down metaphorically how it made the journalist ‘feel’, is outstanding! Be proud. I hope that it ‘Sweet U’ because musically it brought us all together and to ‘me’ THAT means a lot! Give Thanx! *Remember I’m from the City that doesn’t uplift music of this kind in fact I’m pretty invisible so that’s you ALL for creating something worth ‘feel’, ‘seeing’, ‘dancing’ & now ‘talking about’…from a Hip Hop perspective to be found in a magazine dedicated to ‘Blues And Soul’…I indeed am honoured!* 1L♥☺☀

Stay blessed L…you’re great!

I can’t stop movin’…

I need to keep movin’…

I will keep movin’…

Ryan Leslie - Gibberish (The Making Of)

I’m not as talented as haleeeeeeeeee as this dude, but I’m content with what I can do. S’all that matters. I’d like to think I can perform all the feats this guy does (despite the fact I’m referred to as Superman -_-“).

If you put in the work, it reflects on the product. Love what you do? You’ll put it in. Goes for life and relationships. Gotta put in work!

I live by it…always have, always will. Swear on it.

Why do you think I grind ma’fuckin’ 14.5 hours sometimes? Like seriously, who does that shit? And still sleep for 5 hours feelin’ refreshed like I slept double the amount? This shit is gonna kill me later on…I gots to slow down. I don’t wanna crash. I love the internal adrenaline that I swear I carry…but the juice runs out sooner or later. Gots ta recharge the batteries.

All work and no play, makes Swanky an exhausted boy!

BUT…

Hey…I got an international release out. UK baby! That shows for somethin’! I didn’t even wanna take the shine off this so I held back a release yesterday *ahem #TEXTSPERATE (sorry if you Twitter heads were waitin’ for it, I’m an idiot).

Hey…I got an 11/11/11 release comin’ out in the US, that shows for somethin’!

Hey…I’m workin’ with Casey Yugo right now through my band The Vibrasonic Sessions…it’ll show for somethin’…gig date to letcha know.

Hey…I’m workin’ on my debut R&B album “A Dime For Your Thoughts" right now…MOVE YOUR ASS ALREADY MR. OCTAVIO SANTOS! I’ve got 6 songs…chill.

Hey…I’m workin’ on my collaboration with Max Damage as The International Incident…MOVE, MOVE, MOVE! His beats make me cry…I wanna go in so hard and body them. Musical love makin’….YEAAHHHHYUHHHH!!! I linked him and my keyboardist up…yeaahhh!!!

If you wanna hear what me and Max are doin’ for his album (and then our project)…check his A.L.M.A. album preview and listen up to 0:49. I cry. Click his name ABOVE. It’s called “One Time"…need to tweak it just a bit.

Ohhh…not to mention, I’ve got artists I still need to holla back at cuz they expressed not wish but WANT to work with me, which makes me kinda blessed that this Filipino who lives in a city called Mississauga could even be recognized from a blip in a map. That’s MAD COOL to me. Baby Blak from Philly was tweetin’ me earlier that he be in Montreal next month and wants to link, though he failed because I live in Toronto (technical Sauga)…funny, haha!!!

The sense of accomplishment…I WANT IT SOOOOOO BAD. It feels SOOOOO DAMN GOOD. But I feel I really need to keep strivin’ for higher things. Music is applicable to life. I keeps it that way.

Sometimes I forget to eat when I’m workin’ too hard. Not just in the studio (though I stock up nibblings now, hahaha!), I mean at my other job…specific one. I have another though.

Not gonna lie…I wanna be at the Grammys and win one. Is that too much?

Ok…let’s try for a Juno.

I have to be kinda recognized though don’t you think? That’s why I grind!!!!

My boy Royce Birth was a Juno-nominated producer…this guy grind’s like a ma’fucka. I miss my dude…we rock wicked shows when the venue’s right.

Watch us do Senorita by Justin Timberlake. I was kinda hyper that night, haha! =)

I’m not a complicated person…just ambitious to get my craft flyin’ without the aid of a spaceship (but yo, if I can get a spaceship…that’d be ill).

What else am I workin’ on? SHIIIIIIIIIIT!!!

What else do I HAVE to work on in life…and I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout music? I need more out of life. I really do. I’m missin’ things in life. I miss bein’ in a relationship too (sad, LOL! - I was talkin’ to Jan about it last night over bubble tea and shit talkin’)…ahhhh a relationship…one of my many sources of inspiration (in both music and just the inspiration to wake up in the mornin’ knowin’ you’re gonna encounter a smile you’re longin’ to see, the one you wanna hold in your arms…winter’s cuddle season man…).

Hmmmm…

Let’s see if y’all will move when I move. I hope y’all care, LOL!

Maybe this post is just a bitch post and I should stop bitchin’ and be content. HAHA…maybe that’s what it is? Don’t get me wrong, I love all the blessings I already have in my life. I guess I just gotta stay grounded and level headed. Yes.

P.S. My blogs are so link-filled. I just noticed. Well…I need you to know what I’m talkin’ about right? I want you to visualize what I say.

I mean, I’ve got somethin’ that’s out in the UK (and it beats my US release on 11/11/11). WITHOUT THE BONUS TRACK

iTunes has it.

Other download avenues will have it shortly!

I’m tryin’ to get my own CD copy which I will! I asked LyricL to sign it for me =) NOW…I’m gonna try to get more and if anyone’s interested, you know how to reach me. These are limited edition copies.

Support good music and all the artists involved…includin’ ME =D

FYI: “Sweet U"…there will be more surprises in regards to that. I’m excited. So, wait for it ;)

What I love about UK artists is that they’re musically down…not stush and bougie. They big me up and support me which is great. I love workin’ with them!!!

GRIND, GRIND, GRIND!!! S’all I do, don’tcha know.

Swanky Feat. Creamo w/ Roses Gabor – Heart Is Breaking [B.Fr (Hons) Remix]
CAT: JLR-HBF-FREE001
FORMAT: Digital
RELEASE: March 15, 2011
GENRE: Hip hop
“Heart Is Breaking [B.Fr (Hons) Remix]” is a positive track that’s meant to reflect on how relationships should be built and maintained. Relationships can often crumble without the right formula. Advice is given to those pursuing it or are in it to keep it lit. UK rapper Creamo enters the scene and provides a story (hopefully not his, haha!) of a relationship gone awry…when there’s no trust, that’s what happens, you know? Keep yourselves out of trouble fellas! You too my females! This is Canada meets the UK…an international incident.

I like this start to 2011, givin’ you some international flavour.
Ty has been one of those UK rappers that I respect…I respect his hustle and grind and I respect his music. He’s real. In early 2010 (this was the time I was about to get it in the lab for LyricL, Heidi Vogel & Baby Sol via A.C. Layne for “Sweet You”), Ty was havin’ a mix session with Al Mawdsley on the boards for a joint called “Happiness" which is on Ty’s "Special Kind of Fool" album. The track features the vocals of Vula (who has done vocals with Basement Jaxx and backing vocals for some joints on Cee-Lo's “The Lady Killer" among others…). It was an online sit in session and I was choppin’ it up with the good folks inside the online sit-in…DJ Bounce, Vula and Creamo (even busted out the horn to jam a bit). Through the mix session, I was able to link with all three musical folk.
Enter Creamo…he’s a homie of Ty’s and he had mentioned that he was an MC. I took a listen to his stuff and I was diggin’ what he was doin’. The thing I like about international artists is that their flavour is different from what we have down here…different is swanky. I’ve worked with UK people and I get nothin’ but mad love from artists over there…they’re all music aficionados, eclectic and are down to make good music if you can kick it.
When I was listenin’ to “Special Kind of Fool” (by the way, I think you should buy it, I’m flossin’ my copy) the joint that caught me was “Heart Is Breaking”. Ty & Drew Horley produced the joint together and I really like what they did with it.
I wanted to add my 2 cents on it. This was around late May…I had come off fresh from a relationship (and was buildin’ The Knyghts of The Rhyme Table, my 4-person MC unit) and it was sort of fittin’ to write a joint like this. It’s never a good thing to ever get out of one (unless the reasons are extreme like abuse in all forms) and the premise of the track is relationships can turn out bad, but only if you don’t work at it. It takes two to tango…even though it’s the guy’s duty to lead the dance, both parties have to put in equal amounts of effort and never give up. Things slip when one person puts in more than the other and the other less…it’s the way the unfortunate cookie crumbles.
I initially wanted to get RezGeraco (1/4th fellow Knyght) to jump on it, but he declined due to the amount of work on his plate and projects. That was cool. I was thinkin’ who would be dope to accompany me on this track…I know a lot of dope people, but it needed a little kick to it…a little rapid MC work. Then I remembered Creamo and I said to myself, “Why not bring someone close to home?"…well, close to home in terms of where the track originated and who touched it originally. I brought the idea to Creamo and he was all for it and then I brought the idea to Ty and he was down for the run as well. Delays here and there occurred…people got busy and time got lost in the shuffle. Early into this new year, I shouted Creamo once again askin’ him if he was still down to touch the remix and he apologized for the delay. Patience is a virtue…I am quite the patient dude and hence I never gave up on him for this. As soon as I shot him a shout, 2 days after, I get a delivery of vocals on Facebook. It was well worth the wait in my opinion.
Roses Gabor (who has done vocal work with The Gorillaz and former Legendary Roots crew vocal turntablist Scratch among others…) had originally been on the track and I wanted her flavour to seal the deal much like she did on the joint with Ty and Sway, so I kept her on as a sampled vocal. I’m much of a fan of her vocal flavour as well…she’s dope!
And there you have it…what went down on the birth of this remix.

MY HORNS SOUND SO SEXY!!!!

LyricL Feat. Heidi Vogel & Baby Sol - Sweet You (prod. A.C. Layne)

When this track comes out hopefully soon, you’ll know!!!! Daz-I-Kue of Bugz In The Attic mixed this bad mutha so well and Daz e-mailed it to me last night…I guess A.C. decided to re-chop, re-sequence and re-arrange some of my horn work.

S’all good cuz wooooooooooooooooooot!!!

I sound like butter…sexy butter on warm toast.

P.S. So, is Nathan G. callin’ me, or what? This was gonna be like months ago when he came back from Spain cuz he heard from L that I was doin’ this joint up.

TWITTERISMS: LYRICL AGREES TO COLLABORATE

  • SwankySwagger: I will start work on my new joint /w UK's Ad H called "Do You Know Love?" I really want @LyricL on it! I have a vision. Hope for the best.
  • LyricL: @SwankySwagger u know the drill!!! Come we go!!
  • SwankySwagger: @LyricL It's either that joint or another. Just want to let the people know what's good =) We'll see if Cap A wants in too ;) LET'S GOOOOOO!

  • LyricL has loose lips that sink ships and is one of the illest rappers to come out of the UK. I think we have an understandin' that she is goin' to take part in my album (plus, I did help her out with horns that A.C. Layne produced for her!). Philly's Capitol A agreed awhile back that a collabo with both L and myself can happen. We better get on that soon! California's Replife and Boston's Agari Crew are also in the mix I'm pretty sure. The question is, who else wants in?

WILL MY FIRST FEATURE BE RELEASED IN THE U.S. OR U.K.???!?!!

Either way…I’m happy.

But wait…is Melanie Durrant's EP comin' soon too? I contributed horns to "Mr Sun" via Slakah The Beatchild. So…first proper release with me in it will be in Canada? =)

I’m waitin’ for a final mixdown of a track with horns that I contributed on for LyricL's album. The track is called "Sweet You" which features Heidi Vogel and Baby Sol (produced by A.C. Layne). All artists representin’ U.K.

I just received the final mixdown of horns that I contributed for a U.S. vocalist singin’ on a beat produced by a U.K. producer. I can’t name them yet because you can’t even Google this project release yet. I can’t say anythin’ for now…but I’m just tellin’ you to look forward to good choons =)

U.K.’s Clyde is still waitin’ for me and my single "I Quit" which is way overdue…2007 overdue!!!

I’m finishin’ up the recordin’ of "I Must Confess", which has me on the vocals + horns courtesy of U.K. producer Adam Hurst. Detroit’s Exchange Bureau Music has been eyein’ this joint for awhile now and it’s supposed to land on a compilation that features the cream of the crop of Detroit’s electronic/jazz/hip hop music scene. More details soon to come! From what Josh of the label tells me, I’m the only one who is not from Detroit on the compilation (but I will be connected to Detroit somehow) which makes it an honour for them to take me in =)
